Gameplay
A new battle mechanic is the Final Smash, which can be used only by collecting a Smash Ball. Also, players are able to walk and jump while using projectile-shooting items, like the Super Scope.
As a new feature in the game, certain characters can crawl. These characters are Bowser, Diddy Kong, Ivysaur, Lucario, Luigi, Pikachu, Sheik, Solid Snake, Squirtle, Wario, Yoshi, and Zero Suit Samus.
A new technique called the Footstool Jump is introduced. It allows players to jump on an opposing player's head up to five times and spring up by pressing the jump button at the right time. Players are be able to perform Meteor Smashes by doing this as well. The Tether Recovery is a returning tactic in the game. It allows players to grab onto ledges using chain-like items, such as a Plasma Whip or a Hookshot. Gliding is also a technique in this game, available only to characters with wings. When gliding is used, players are able to glide across the stage and be able to control the way they fly. They can direct themselves upwards or downwards, depending on the direction the "movement" button is pointed in.
Another feature not present in the past two games is Slipping. Any character can slip. The feature has no upside for the players that slip other than the invincibility frames that are granted to the players when they get up. Players can slip when trying to run suddenly, go down slopes, or turn around. Players can also slip on a Banana Peel.
The game also features three different Taunts for each character, while the past games only feature one taunt. Snake is the only character that has all identical taunts.
The game can be controlled with one of the four controlling methods:
| Wii Remote (Sideways) | Wii Remote + Nunchuk Attachment |
|---|---|
| Wii Classic Controller | Nintendo GameCube Controller |
There are a few differences between the controller methods. The Wii Remote + Nunchuk Attachment has a special feature, the Shake Smash, allowing the player to execute Smash Attacks into the direction they shake the controller to. The Classic Controller, Wii Remote + Nunchuk Attachment, and the GameCube controller also have a function which disables the jump by tapping the control stick upwards.
The execution of standard combos has been made simpler; for many characters, the
does no longer have to be hit repeatedly, but it is enough to hold it
down for the character to start a combo attack. The effects, however,
usually differ.
Players are able to set their own button configuration rather than have to play with the default configuration. The configuration can be saved on the Wii Remote's internal memory, allowing to take it to a friend's and play with one's own button configuration there. The Player is able to insert names with up to five letters, as in Super Smash Bros. Melee. In the previous game, names are only a gimmick. In this game, they now also save the player's controlling options to avoid having to select the control method each time.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl, known in Japan as Dairantō Smash Brothers X (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX, lit. "Great Melee Smash Brothers X"), is a fighting game for the Wii. It is the third game in the Super Smash Bros. series, preceded by Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee. The game was designed by Masahiro Sakurai, who also created the preceeding Super Smash Bros. games, and developed by a team especially created for it. The game uses a game engine called Havok that mainly focuses on the game physics.[4]
After a planned release date of December 3rd, 2007 in North America, all regions had their release dates pushed back. It was then slated for release on February 10, 2008 in North America, and January 24, 2008 for Japan. However on January 15, 2008, it was then delayed to January 31, 2008 for Japan[5] and March 9, 2008 for North America.[6] It was released in Australia on June 26, 2008 and in Europe on June 27, 2008.[2]
Following the release of the game in Japan, a bug was discovered in the game which displays an error message every time it starts,[7] though players are able to close it and play the game as usual. There has been a replacement program.[3] The game requires 128 blocks of Wii internal memory to save game data[8] and it can't be copied. However even though players are not able to transfer their data onto another Wii, players can still send replays, snapshots, and custom stages onto other Wii systems.
Playable Characters
With 35 playable characters (39, if Sheik, Zelda's transformation, Zero Suit Samus, Samus's transformation, and the Pokemon Trainer's three Pokemon without including Pokemon Trainer are counted), Super Smash Bros. Brawl
has ten more characters than the previous installment. 21 characters
are available from the start, while the other fourteen need to be
unlocked to become playable. Only five of the characters from the
previous game aren't playable in this game which are Pichu, Dr. Mario, Mewtwo, Young Link and Roy. Additionally, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the first game to feature third-party characters as playable characters: Sonic and Solid Snake. The Special Moves and Final Smash for each character are listed on the right-side column.

Items
Items randomly appear on any stage in the game, and in standard Brawl mode, the player can choose to ban certain items from appearing or increase/decrease the frequency of items appearing. In Classic and All Star mode, these options cannot be modified. Certain items from particular game series appear more frequently than they would on other stages, such as Banana Peels on Donkey Kong stages, Poké Balls on Pokémon stages, etc.
![]() | Item
![]() | Description
![]() |
|---|---|---|
| Assist Trophy | Comparable to a Poké Ball, this summons a random character to help the character who used it. | |
| Banana Peel | Can be dropped on the stage. If other characters touch it, the character will trip over it and fall. | |
| Barrel | These bear a resemblance to crates but can tip over and roll. If hit by a rolling one, the player will receive damage. | |

| Bob-omb | A simple and powerful bomb. If it is left untouched for a little while, it will get up and walk around on its own. If one is thrown directly at an opponent, it explodes and causes a huge amount of knockback. Once enough time has passed in Sudden Death, Bob-ombs start to fall from the sky in droves. | |
| Bumper | When thrown, it lies on the ground or floats in the air and hits back all characters touching it. Relatively powerful, and players can be K.O.'d. | |
| Bunny Hood | The Bunny Hood provides a substantial boost to the user's running speed and jumping height. | |
| Capsule | Break open these little capsules to find items. They are also effective as a throwing item. Capsules will explode on occasion. | |

| Deku Nut | Throwing one of these near an enemy with creates a flash that stuns foes temporarily. When the Deku Nut makes contact with an opponent in midair, it can send them quite a distance. | |
| Dragoon | When a player manages to collect all three parts of it, he or she can ram into the stage, knocking out all players within the crosshair. | |
| Blast Box | If hit with a strong attack or fire-based attack, the Blast Box will explode, causing anything in the area to be blown away. | |
| Fan | This item doesn’t pack much of a punch but is easy to score rapid multiple combos; it can also be used to break shields. The Fan has deceptive strength when thrown straight up in the air in modes like Multi-Man Brawl. | |
| Fire Flower | The Fire Flower is a shooting item that spouts a torrent of fire over a short distance, eventually running out of flames. | |

| Golden Hammer | Acts like the Hammer, only is much stronger, and allows the player to float in mid-air, if the button is tapped rapidly. Sometimes, the Golden Hammer will be nothing but a Golden Squeaky Hammer, which cannot damage opponents. The Golden Squeaky Hammer is similar to the Hammer losing its head. | |
| Gooey Bomb | Can be attached to the ground or a character and explodes after a few seconds. | |
| Green Shell | Throw, hit, or jump on this shell to send it sliding along the ground. Green Shells can suddenly reverse the direction they are traveling if they bump into a wall or are hit by an attack, so keep an eye out for returning shells. | |
| Hammer | Seizing this item makes the user unleash a barrage of hammer swings on a opponent. The attack itself is quite powerful but the user will lose the ability to perform midair jumps and special moves while attacking with it. Sometimes the head of the hammer will fall right off. | |

| Hothead | Hotheads slide across the ground releasing bursts of sparks and damaging the user opponents. When they are hit with fire or electricity-based attacks, they grow even bigger. | |
| Key | This item will open locked doors the players encounter within The Subspace Emissary. If the player loses a key he or she is were holding on the way to the door, the player must return to where it was originally found. | |
| Lip's Stick | Hitting an enemy with this or throwing it caused a flower to bloom on the opponent’s head. While the flower is on his or her head, the opponent will slowly accumulate damage. The more the user beats the foe with Lip’s Stick, the bigger the flower on his or her head will grow. The flower can be removed from the player's head by shaking the control stick back and forth. | |
| Lightning | Touching one of these makes all of the user's opponents shrink. The effect is more dramatic and dangerous than the one brought on by a Poison Mushroom. Sometimes the Lightning will backfire and only the user will shrink. | |
| Maxim Tomato | These tomatoes are emblazoned with a striking letter "M." Eating one of these reduces the consumer's damage by 50 percentage points. | |
| Metal Box | Turns the user into metal form, giving complete resistance to flinching from lighter attacks. The user falls faster after jumping. | |
| Motion-Sensor Bomb | Set one of these on a floor or wall, and it will react to the next moving object in its proximity by detonating. They are small and inconspicuous, so they can catch opponents by surprise. | |
| Mr. Saturn | A relatively weak item that can be thrown at opponents multiple times. Also a good shield breaker. | |
| Orange Cube | This item gives valuable items and will not reappear once the player gets them. It also helps by increasing the clear percentage. They only appear in The Subspace Emissary. | |
| Party Ball | When hit, Party Balls float up into the air and split open, raining down a torrent of items. These items are known to drop nothing but Bob-ombs on occasion. | |
| Pellet | A throwing item found only on the Distant Planet stage. Throwing one at an "Onion" will release some items. | |
| Pitfall | Can be set on the ground. Other characters fall straight into a pit when walking over it, or if hit directly with it. | |
| Poison Mushroom | Touching one makes the consumer shrink in size; the user's blows will do less damage, and the user flies further when hit. | |
| Poké Ball | Throw a Poké Ball to summon a randomly selected Pokémon that will assist the user. | |
| Ray Gun | The Ray Gun is a beam gun that lets the user fire fast-moving blasts. It comes loaded with 16 shots. When the user has exhausted the ammo, it can still be useful since the user can throw the gun at the opponent to score a Smash attack. | |
| Sandbag | Beating Sandbag up make it drop items and food. As Sandbag accumulates damage, it gradually becomes easier to hit far distances. Of course, beat Sandbag too much and its pool of items will run dry. | |
| Screw Attack | While wearing it, the Screw Attack ability is added to the user's standard and midair jumps. The user is still able to attack as normal when capable of using the Screw Attack. | |
| Smash Ball | Attacking one of these until it breaks gives the ability to use a Final Smash. | |
| Smoke Ball | Emits a large cloud of colorful smoke. Doesn't do any damage, but sticks to anyone it hits. | |
| Smart Bomb | A bomb that explodes with a large blast radius when thrown, destroying anything in its reach. May occasionally fail. | |
| Soccer Ball | No one can pick up this item, but when a player hits the ball with a strong attack, it bursts into flames and flies off into the air, depending on how strong the attack is. The angle of the attack determines the direction the Soccer Ball will fly off in. | |
| Spring | Hoping on a Spring makes the user perform an extra high jump. Every so often a Spring will topple over sideways. When it does so, anyone who makes contact with the fallen Spring will be knocked sideways. | |
| Stock Ball | In The Subspace Emissary, Stock Balls increase the number of lives the player have left. | |
| Super Mushroom | Touch one of these to grow huge. In this enhanced form, the user won’t fly as far when hit and is capable of dealing harder-hitting blows than usual. However, they become easier to strike. | |
| Super Scope | This beam gun lets the user choose between attacking with rapid-fire or charged shots. The Super Scope holds enough energy for 48 rapid-fire shots, or about three fully charged blasts. | |
| Superspicy Curry | Eat one of these and the player starts spewing flames from his or her mouth. The user can, however, continue to attack as normal. This item also has the side effect of making the user run, even if they try to walk. | |
| Starman | Just touching one of these gives the user temporary invincibility. The effect lasts 10 seconds. | |
| Star Rod | Perform a strong side attack or side Smash attack while holding the Star Rod to swing the rod and simultaneously fire off a star-shaped projectile. When the user throw a Star Rod at the opponent, it sends them rocketing off sideways. | |
| Team Healer | Only usable in Team battles, can recover a teammate's health if tossed at them. If thrown at opponents, it may hurt or heal them. | |
| Timer | Picking up this item slows down the flow of time for all other players. Occasionally the Timer will have a different effect and only slow the user down, or it may slow down everyone. | |
| Trophy Stand | This item turns enemies into trophies in The Subspace Emissary. Stronger enemies must be sufficiently weakened to be successfully turned into a trophy. | |
| Bike Pieces | If the Wario Bike is dismantled, the pieces can be thrown at others. | |
| Unira | Throwing a Unira into the ground or attacking it causes its spikes to extend, damaging opponents who bump into it. Attacking the Unira again make its spikes retract. | |
| Vegetables | Heals the player. Appears only on the Summit stage. | |
| Warp Star | The user takes a ride on a Warp Star to launch a vicious attack from above on the opponent. It can be controlled where the Warp Star falls by using the Control Stick. |

|---|---|---|
| Andross | Andross, the main villain from the Star Fox series (his appearance was based off his original depiction) appears from the Assist Trophy, and, floating in the background of a stage, inhales and spits forth a flurry of harmful polygons that damage characters. This is based on his main attack in the original Star Fox. | |
| Devil | The Devil is from Devil World, a game only released in Europe. When released from the Assist Trophy, he shifts the stage boundaries. The players will only be able to move within the visible screen and will lose a life if they go off the screen at any point. | |
| Dr. Wright | Dr. Wright from Sim City appears and attacks opponents by building large skyscrapers beneath them, sending them flying upwards. The attack is executed right in front of Dr. Wright and the vertical range is very high, so fighters should run away immediately after he is released. There is a one-in-ten chance that Dr. Wright will summon a particularly large skyscraper for even more range and power. | |
| Excitebike | A group of Excitebikers from the game Excitebike, appearing in their original 8-bit form, drive across the stage, dragging players along with them, eventually driving off screen with the players caught. | |
| Hammer Bro. | A Hammer Bro. appears on the stage and throws hammers at opponents. He can jump up and throw them in midair and he can also throw hammers while on the ground. | |
| Helirin | The Helirin from Kuru Kuru Kururin appears as a stage obstacle. It acts as an additional platform, rotating on its axis and moving, sometimes getting in the way when players are trying to recover. | |
| Jeff | Jeff puts five rockets on the ground, which shoots into the air, homing in on enemies in unpredictable trajectories. Jeff finishes with one large rocket. There is a one-in-five chance that he will summon a second wave of rockets before disappearing. | |
| Jill & Drill Dozer | Jill from Drill Dozer charges at opponents in her driller. She can jump at them and turn around, but she may fall off the stage if she goes too far. | |

| Little Mac | Coming from the game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, when Little Mac appears, he will continue to punch the opposing player closest to him. He then finishes with a powerful uppercut move. | |
| Lyn | Lyn enters from Fire Emblem (GBA), the very first Fire Emblem released worldwide. When released, she charges her sword, then slashes an opposing player with little to no warning and with great power. | |
| Metroid | A Metroid from the series of the same name will float around the stage, latching onto any players it encounters and sucking their health away, similar to what they do in the Metroid games. | |
| Mr. Resetti | Mr. Resetti is a character from the Animal Crossing series. When he is released, he simply stands in one spot, and lectures the players through a speech bubble. Mr. Resetti also occasionally causes a small explosion when he is furious. Mr. Resetti can be made to disappear prematurely if the stage scrolls or the platform he is on is destroyed and there's a knockout zone below him. | |
| Nintendog | A Nintendog from the game Nintendogs briefly appears on the battleground before blocking the players' views by covering the whole screen causing great distraction. | |
| Saki Amamiya | Saki Amamiya from Sin and Punishment: Successor to the Earth, will appear, and use his Cannon Sword to shoot and slash his opponents. He can jump and shoot as well. | |
| Samurai Goroh | Samurai Goroh from the F-Zero series appears and slashes away at the fighters with his katana. This is only limited to a horizontal direction, but samurai Goroh is able to jump. | |
| Stafy | Stafy, from the Japan-only Densetsu no Stafy series, appears as a vulnerable Assist Trophy. Stafy will perform his spin attack on an opponent if he has the chance. However, fighters can easily attack him and send him flying. | |
| Tingle | Tingle simply calls up random effects, such as a barrage of flowers that appear on the stage. These can be helpful (like a rain of hammers) or a hindrance (like a tight close-up of one of the players). | |
| Waluigi | Waluigi chases after a selected foe, kicks him/her into the ground and finally, he does one final power kick, or hits the player with his racket. |
Unlockable Assist Characters

|---|---|---|
| Custom Robo | Custom Robo, better known as Ray Mk III, comes from the game Custom Robo Arena. Being a toy, it is a very small Assist Character, but it makes the most of its speed by flying around the stage at fast speeds. It fires bullets from its left gun, and fires missiles from its right hand, as a means of attack. To unlock it, the player must play 100 matches in Vs. Mode or any related mode. | |
| Isaac | Isaac from Golden Sun uses "Psynergy Move", creating a large hand that pushes enemies away, or off the stage entirely. To unlock him, the player must play 200 matches in Vs. Mode or any related mode. | |
| Infantry and Tanks | A group of 2D sprites from the Advance Wars series will appear in the scenery to attack the rivals. To unlock them, the player must play 300 matches in Vs. Mode or any related mode. | |
| Barbara | Barbara enters from the Japan-Only game, Daigassou! Band Brothers. When released, she plays her guitar, sending a powerful field of music around her, which damages opposing players caught in it. The final note does the most damage and has the biggest radius. To unlock her, the player must collect 25 hidden songs. | |
| Gray Fox | Gray Fox, from the Metal Gear series, slices his opponents with his sword, causing heavy damage. He also deflects projectiles. Gray Fox is unique among Assist Trophies in that he will return from above should he fall off the stage. To unlock him, the player must unlock Snake. | |
| Shadow the Hedgehog | Shadow, from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, appears as a Assist Trophy. Shadow uses Chaos Control to slow down all opposing fighters. To unlock him, the player must unlock Sonic. |
Glitches
Bang, Bang, Bang
This is a relatively simple glitch to perform. First, get a final
smash ball for Kirby. Then, have someone grab an assist trophy. Once
someone has grabbed one, use Kirby's final smash while that person still
has the assist trophy, but before the trophy is actually used. He will
start banging his utensils like usual, but Kirby will never stop
banging.
Disappearing Hat
First the player must choose Captain Falcon,
and fight Jigglypuff with a green nightcap. Then the player has to get a
Smashball and hit Jigglypuff with the Blue Falcon. When Jigglypuff
lands it won't have a hat on.
Double Glass Breaking
One player goes down with the bat at a close range while the other
player hits sandbag down (not far) and if done correctly one player
breaks the glass hitting sandbag down and the other player hits sandbag
(close) and if sandbag hits the platform then the glass will break
again.
Earthquake Glitch
Use Kirby and select PictoChat. Then go to the very edge of the
platform where it is slanted, and use Stone. The whole stage will be
shaking and Kirby will be acting as if he just landed from Stone over
and over again with dust all around him and stars above him. If a player
comes within range, they will be repeatedly hit with Stone until it
automatically wears off.
Final Stucker
As of now, the only platform this will work on is the tree from the
original Pokemon Stadium. It's similar to the Kirby Earthquake, only
with your Up+B. Go on the ledge mentioned before. Then use your Up+B on
it. You should get stuck on it and you will release yourself in a few
seconds.
Get Stuck In Walls
The player will need a custom stage with any shape with a hole in it
but no opening. Pick any character and make it a player or CPU (Player
works best). Now pick Fox, Falco or Wolf and set them player. The player
will need one smash ball roaming around the stage. Make the random
player next to the shape. Have Fox, Falco or Wolf get the smash ball and
peform the final smash on that random character. Have him use the
cannon repeatedly until the end up in the shape. Shoot a couple more
times to free the enemy.
Giga Trouble
With Giga Bowser, things could get nasty. First, the player should
transform into Giga Bowser. Then, the Kirby Earthquake should be done,
but Giga Bowser should be put right next to the corner. The result is
that Kirby will get stuck there forever, and Giga Bowser will
continuously take damage.
Kirby Punch
Kirby should copy Captain Falcon
and use the Falcon Punch. The best strategy to use Falcon Punch with
Captain Falcon is to face away from the other opponents, short jump
forward or backward then the Falcon Punch should be used and the player
should turn to their opponents. But if they use this with Kirby, what
will happen is when Kirby does a short jump and does a Falcon Punch and
turns in the other direction, Kirby will all of a sudden be really high
in the air.
Lifeless Giga Bowser
If the player plays a stamina battle, and he/she plays as Bowser, when Bowser gets a Smash Ball, and has 1% if they use the Smash ball, and the opposing player attacks, Bowser will have 0%, and live.
Lots of Items Glitch
To activate this glitch, Kirby and Olimar should be on a large enough
stage. Then the player should get the Final Smash ball for Kirby and
place Olimar far away from him. Then, Olimar should continuously pluck
out Pikmin. If Olimar is far enough away, he won't get sucked into
Kirby's pot, but his Pikmin will. As such, players can keep plucking
Pikmin until the pot has reached the max amount of items it can hold and
the result is a bunch of items (this trick also works with Fox's
blaster).
Magnetic Wall
While playing the level The Lake in the game's adventure mode, having completing the Rayquaza
battle and traversing through the section above the lake the player
must walk up to the wall on the far right of the screen, the player must
hold right and make a small jump. This will cause the player to be
drawn to the wall. The player can walk away, but they will move very
slowly and if they stop or jump, they will quickly move toward the wall
either and once again be stuck.
Negative Zone Glitch
This glitch happens in the Home-Run Contest in Co-op Mode.
If at a specific time when one player gets off the platform with the bat and the other player hits the Sandbag
down then the player with the bat (who is off the platform) hits the
Sandbag, and if used at a specific time the Sandbag will go backwards
and the camera will follow it, if done right the player will see there
is no distance or floor and the music and cheering will stop and if the
Sandbag is thrown far enough he will hit an invisible glass wall (which
can be told because if contact is made, the sound of a breaking mirror
will be heard) then sandbag will slide and while sliding will stand up.
Peach and Luigi "Merged"
This glitch appears during the end of a team battle. Any player is
the blue team, who must knock their opponents out in one hit. Two
players are the red team, being Princess Peach as part of the team. The fourth player will be Luigi
for the green team. Once the member of the blue team has blown their
opponents, the results score will show Luigi merged to Peach while they
congratulate the winner. Players can actually do this glitch with many
other characters.
Play as Giant Jigglypuff
First, the player must select the Bridge of Eldin stage. The player should also have a Final Smash prepared. King Bulbin will eventually come and destroy part of the bridge with a bomb. Soon after, some black matter will restore that part of the bridge. When the matter begins to rebuild the bridge, the player has to use the final smash in midair in the gap. Jigglypuff will begin to inflate while the bridge is getting mended. When the bridge is completely fixed, Jigglypuff should bounce up onto the bridge and remain giant. Its attacks are completely the same, only that they have a much longer reach. Its movement seems to have slowed somewhat as well. It also becomes a very easy target and is simple to KO, as the slightest touch of the KO range will take it out. With this glitch activated, having Yoshi perform his Egg Lay attack will make Jigglypuff grow even bigger. This glitch can also be exploited with other characters. With most characters that have a transformation type final smash, they will stay in their final smash form and they will retain the stats and attributes of their final smash form unyil KO'd; for example, R.O.B. will have an infinite final smash and/or be impervious to all harm, until KO'd. For the other transformation type characters and all other characters, they will have the glowing aura (from obtaining the smash ball) around them until they are KO'd. Fighters which when actvating their final smash the camera zoom up on them, with timing, will stay zoomed up to the fighter until KO'd.
Sonic's Super Spring
The player will need to choose Sonic on the Character Select Screen. Then, choose the Summit
stage. When it starts descending jump off the Iceberg and right before
Sonic hits the ground, Sonic will need to use his up special. He will
then be off screen for a very long time and then he'll come down. This
also works with many other characters.
Steal and Warp
You must do this glitch on a stage where there are two solid
platforms one above the other. Not including custom stages, there are
three: Skyworld, Mario Bros. and Big Blue. Also, the match must be on
team stamina mode. Kirby is by himself on one team, two other cpus on
another team. Both of them need to have 1 stamina. Now pick a stage that
meets the requirements above. Go on top of a solid platform with
another solid platform below it and steal someone's power. Kirby should
have somehow warped the other character to under the platform.
Walk Through Walls
Create a stage where a bunch of solid stone blocks are bunched up next to each other. Have Kirby jump right between the tiny space between the blocks. Kirby will now be inside the blocks. He can escape by flying to the top.
